January 28, 1963: Pastor Mrs Funke Felix Adejumo is born in Ibadan, Oyo State. As a girl child in her family, her father was advised not to send her to school as she ‘cannot’ be successful. Pastor Mrs Funke Felix Adejumo is a well known preacher, marriage counsellor and humanitarian as she helps pay school fees of indigent people through her foundation and also runs an orphanage. She is happily married to Bishop Felix Adejumo and has 4 biological children amongst other adopted children and grandchildren.
January 28, 1956: Queen Elizabeth II visits Nigeria for the first time. While in Nigeria, she worshipped at the Cathedral Church of Christ in Marina, Lagos, the oldest Anglican cathedral in the Church of Nigeria and which during the Queen’s visit was under the provost Reverend A.W. Howells. During her visit, the Queen donated a chair to the cathedral.
January 28, 814: Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, dies. He was, in his day, not only one of the greatest political rulers of all time, but also more influential in church matters than the pope. He saw his task as secular ruler “to defend with our arms the holy Church of Christ against attacks by the heathen from any side and against devastation by the infidels”.
January 28, 1547: England’s Henry VIII, who split the church of England from Rome and presided over the founding of the Anglican church, dies.
January 28, 1769: Thomas Middleton, first Anglican bishop of Calcutta, is born in England. While he oversaw a vast diocese covering all the territories of the East India Company, the church made some great advances, including the establishment of Bishop’s College in Calcutta(a training college for missionaries in Asia).
