How Can I obtain mercy from God?

TOPIC: KEYS TO RECEIVING THE MERCY OF GOD (PART 2)

Scripture: Psalm 34: 18. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Beloved, I welcome you to another Moment of Daily Encounter! Yesterday, we established that the mercy of God can be received if only we assume a posture of absolute surrender which is termed brokenness. Today we shall be looking at another key.

What are the keys to receiving the mercy of God?

The keys are:
1. Brokenness (Ps. 51:17) (details of this in our yesterday meditations).

2. Contrite heart(Ps. 51:17): Please note that the heart in question here is not the biological pumping organ but the spirit of a man .

What do we mean by contrite heart?

A contrite heart simply means a crushed heart! This is a heart that offers no excuses and shifts no blame for offences.

A contrite heart happens when a human spirit stops justifying its wrong choices, awakens to the depth of its depravity, and humbly accepts God’s righteous condemnation of sin. He is willing to mourn his spiritual poverty like Jesus said:

Matthew 5: 4. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

This is to say you can’t be mourning over your spiritual life and not be comforted with mercy. Mercy is one way God comfort His people. Both in Bible day’s and in our time any one who show a contrite heart or mourn over his spiritual state receives mercy.

A contrite heart is a penitent heart! And a Penitence is the state of being sorrowful over one’s flaws or actions.

To be penitent is to feel repentant of one’s sins. It is to be “poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3). The penitent have deep remorse that motivates a change in behavior. Penitence does everything possible to make amends of their wrongs. This is the heart that can access mercy cheaply.

The mercy of God is available to the penitent, a contrite heart because that is the atmosphere where God dwells:

Isaiah 57: 15. For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

God’s presence is with a contrite heart or a crushed spirit. Remember your heart and your spirit are synonymous. This is what prophet Joel mean when he said:.

Joel 2: 13. And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

To rend your heart according to the scripture means wholehearted surrender to God: “Pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord” !

This is not false humility, neither is it the outward pretence of tearing one’s clothes like the nation of Israel usually do in time past.

A good example is king Ahab, he did abominable things when he was a king of Israel in the day of prophet Elijah. And when confronted with his sins, he shows a contrite heart, a heart of repentance and he obtained mercy of God.

1 Kings 21: 27. And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. 28. And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 29. Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: but in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.

3. The third key is fasting and prayer: Fasting: which is abstinence from pleasure when combined with a contrite heart is a fuel to receiving the mercy of God . And that was what David did(2Sam.12:16) when he was pleading for mercy after committing adultery and murder and the Lord had mercy on him. King Ahab also did the same thing when the prophecy concerning his family destruction came to him (1Kg.21:21-27).

Beloved, if it is mercy that you desire then get ready for a contrite heart and get ready to fast!

The fasting helps you to condition your heart like the penitent calling for the spirit of Mercy! I guarantee you, God will not turn you down if you approach Him with this posture.

Remember this: Heaven is real and hell is real! Mercy is abundant at the throne of mercy, if you desire it then turn to Jesus today.

Prayer points:
– Father thank you for your word to me today.
– Father help me to develop a contrite heart in the name of Jesus.

Prophetic Declaration:
– I declare an end has come to any form of satanic punishment in your life in the name of Jesus.
– May the door of mercy be open unto you permanently in the name of Jesus.

From your brother Alex
God bless you richly
